Your Home Closing Checklist: Everything You Need to Do Before and After Moving Day

Update Your Address With:

  • Canada Post (can be done online)

  • Billing accounts (bank, credit cards, cell phone provider, etc.)

  • Mail, magazine, and newspaper subscriptions

  • Driver's licence, auto registration, and CAA

  • Insurance providers (auto, life, home, etc.)

  • Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) — important for tax purposes and benefit payments

  • Elections Canada (voter registration)

  • Your employer's HR or payroll department

Set Up Your New Home:

  • Open utility accounts (gas, hydro, etc.) to start on your closing date

  • Arrange the transfer of any rental items, such as a hot water tank or furnace, if applicable

  • Set up a new home insurance policy effective on your closing date

  • Order cable and internet service

  • Change your locks — you don't know how many copies of the old keys exist

  • Locate your main water shutoff, electrical panel, and gas meter before you need them in an emergency

  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — replace batteries or units as needed

  • Condo owners: Register with your property management office

  • Condo owners: Book the elevator for moving day — most buildings require advance reservation

  • Condo owners: Obtain a parking pass or loading dock access for your movers

  • House owners: Look up your city's garbage and recycling pickup schedule

  • Update your address with your medical, dental, and pharmacy providers

  • Consider switching to a more conveniently located bank branch

Moving Day Prep:

  • Book your movers well in advance

  • Empty all cupboards, drawers, closets, and appliances before the move

  • Keep cash, jewellery, and important documents with you personally — don't pack them in the moving truck

  • Make arrangements for transporting pets and/or children

  • Confirm financial arranagements and key pickup instructions with your lawyer ahead of closing
